Problem

Home coffee brewers struggle to achieve their desired cup because:

• Uncertain Brew Ratios: Different beans require specific brew ratios based on roast profile and roaster intention, leading to confusion and inconsistent results.

• Aging Beans: As coffee beans age, their ideal brew ratio changes, making it difficult to maintain a consistent taste throughout a bag.

• Market Overload: The overwhelming variety of coffee beans makes it challenging for home brewers to find suitable options based on their desired taste or brewing method.

• Inaccessible Tasting Notes: Professional tasting notes offered by roasters often use complex language, making it difficult for casual coffee drinkers to translate them into their desired flavor profile.

This lack of clear information and guidance results in frustration, wasted coffee, and an inability for home brewers to consistently achieve their perfect cup.

Research

To gain a well-rounded understanding of the home barista experience, this project employed research triangulation. We utilized surveys to identify user segments and their brewing preferences. Interviews provided deeper insights into individual challenges and pain points. Finally, a competitor analysis revealed existing solutions like brew timers and calculators, but also highlighted limitations in user-friendliness.

By combining these research methods, I was able to paint a holistic picture of the home brewing landscape, uncovering opportunities to develop a truly user-centered solution.
